What is a Horn? Different Types, sounds and how does it work?

A horn is a wind instrument. It usually consists of brass or silver, but in some cases, copper, tin, iron, or even gold can be used. You must be having horns in your vehicles. But do you know how many types of horns for cars are there? How do horns for bikes operate? Let us discuss everything about horns for cars and bikes in detail.

What are the parts of a car horn?

A horn consists of three parts:

  • The Bell: It is the rounded beginning part that looks like the bell of an old phone when it is staying on top of the middle piece. This section produces most of the sound that comes out of the horn.
  • The Mouthpiece: It is conical in shape and ends with a round hole in it. When playing the instrument you place your lips over this opening to produce different notes. Nowadays mouthpieces often have water guards under them to keep moisture out from between the player’s lips and the mouthpiece.
  • The Middle Section: It is the long cone-shaped piece in between bell and mouthpiece. It curves around to fit on top of the bell of this section. This prevents any air from escaping while blowing into the instrument. At the same time, it permits a player to produce continuous notes or sounds with less effort.

What are the types of horns?

There are four types of musical horns available for cars and motorbikes as mentioned below:

  1. Single Horns: These are mostly necessary for two-wheelers and small cars. They produce a constant tone, high-pitched sound which can be irritating to the ears of other people around.
  2. Twin-Tone Air Horns: These are similar to single horns but they have a different design. That is why they can produce a dual sound with less effort from the driver/cyclist.
  3. Musical Horns: These types of horns are made from musical instruments such as trumpet or tuba and produce a musical note. They include Melody air horn, Train air horn, Disco air horn, etc.
  4. Sensor activated Air Horns: This type provides more safety than all other types of horns. They become active only when the car/bike is in motion, so they can’t be used while parking or stopping at red traffic lights.

How does the horn for cars and bikes work?

Most horns use a diaphragm, called a driver which vibrates at low frequencies to produce sound waves in the air. By using valves (hand-operated levers which open and close different sets of tubing inside an organ) different sounds can be produced through one tube. Such as musical tunes like that of a trumpet or flute and long-tone blasts like siren noises. As we all know that in cars there are very few spaces for any kind of wind instrument; Musical horns which we develop from musical instruments such as trumpet or tuba, produce musical notes. This is possible because when you press the button in the horn, it automatically activates an electric circuit. This in turn triggers the solenoid valves inside the small tube so that pressure waves can allow flow through it easily.

The working mechanism is simple; an electrical current flows through the solenoid valve. This causes two internal reeds (metal tongues) to vibrate against each other. It makes sound waves flow through an output tube blowing air out into the atmosphere. When the electricity stops flowing through this process of sound generation stops immediately. Just like single-tone horns these musicals also produce continuous sounds until you press the button again. Both types of horns have a safety shut-off mechanism to prevent damage and air wastage due to continuous blowing.
