  • The Epley maneuver (Also known as the canalith repositioning maneuver):

    The Epley Maneuver is a well-known vertigo exercise that is used to treat symptoms of BPPV like dizziness, instability, balance problems, & spinning sensations. It helps treat these symptoms by repositioning the accidentally dislodged calcium crystals inside the middle ear, back into their original position inside the semicircular canal of the inner ear. These crystals are motion-sensitive, hence they cause false perceptions of movement when they are inside the inner ear, each time you move your head. For this reason, BPPV attacks are often brought on The success rate of the Epley maneuver is over 90%, & most patients are able to get relief from their symptoms in just one time. However, some others might need to perform the Epley maneuver more than once to get the desired result.

    To perform the Epley Maneuver for left-ear BPPV, follow the instructions below:

    -Sit on your bed with your legs out in front of you in an outstretched position. Place a pillow behind your back.
    -Next, turn your head 45 degrees towards the left.
    -Quickly lie back until your shoulders are on the pillow. Wait for any dizziness to pass, then wait another 30 seconds.
    -Now turn your head 90 degrees towards the right without lifting it. Stay in this position for about 30 seconds.
    -Finally, sit upright on the edge of your bed & come back into your original position.

    For right-ear BPP, simply reverse the directions of the steps in the instructions above. For best results, try performing the exercises once every day in a set of five repetitions, until the time you don’t experience any BPPV symptoms for 24 hours.

  • The Brandt-Daroff exercises:

    The Brandt-Daroff exercises are another type of vertigo exercise that utilizes gravity to help dislodge the accidentally misplaced calcium crystals in the semicircular canal of the inner ear.
    These exercises are useful in treating vertigo symptoms like dizziness, balance issues, & spinning sensations.

    Follow the steps below to perform the Brandt-Daroff exercises for quick & effective vertigo treatment.

    -Sit in the middle of your bed with your feet on the floor & turn your head 45 degrees towards the right.
    -Lie down on your left without moving your head. In this position, wait for 30 seconds for the dizziness to pass. Then, wait another 30 seconds.
    -Return to the original position, & wait for another 30 seconds for any dizziness to pass.
    -Next, turn your head 45 degrees towards the left & repeat steps two & three on the right side.
    -Return to your original position and hold the pose for about 30 seconds.
    -Perform one set of five repetitions on both the right & left.
    Perform these exercises for vertigo once in the morning & another during the night. Keep performing for atleast 2 weeks or until you experience no symptoms for at least 24 hours.

  • The Semont Maneuver:

    The Semont Maneuver, also known as the liberatory maneuver, is another vertigo exercise used for vertigo treatment. Although it’s easier to perform & takes lesser time than the Brandt-Daroff exercises, the Semont Maneuver should be performed under the guidance of a licensed physical therapist. This is done for better physical outcomes.

    To perform the Semont Maneuver exercise for vertigo treatment for left-ear BPPV treatment, follow the instructions below:

    -Sit upright on your bed & turn your head 45 degrees towards the right direction.
    -Now drop quickly towards the left until your head is on the bed. Hold this position for at least a minute.
    -Now quickly move your body towards the right direction in just one movement. Perform this action without changing the angle of your head. You should now be looking towards the floor.
    -Hold this position for a minute & slowly return to your original point.

    For right-ear BPPV, turn your head towards the left and drop to your right side first.
    You should perform this exercise for vertigo at least once every day until your symptoms resolve.

  • The Foster Maneuver:

    The Foster maneuver is called the half somersault maneuver. It is one of the easiest vertigo exercises to perform & doesn’t require any help from an outsider or the presence of a bed or table.

    To perform the Foster Maneuver for left-ear BPPV, follow the steps written below. For right-ear BPPV, just perform the steps on the right side.

    -Start by kneeling down & putting your hands on the floor.
    -Tilt your head upwards & backward & wait for any dizziness to pass.
    -Now place your forehead on the floor & tuck your knees towards your chin.
    -Next, turn your head 45 degrees towards your left elbow & hold this position for about 30 seconds.
    -Now while your head is at a 45-degree angle, raise it until it’s on the level of your back and shoulders. hold this position for about 30 seconds.
    -Now raise your head towards a fully upright position.

    Repeat these exercises about 4 to 5 times in each set. Perform them until you experience no vertigo symptoms for about 24 hours.

Safety Tips while performing exercises for vertigo:

There are certain safety tips that you should keep in mind when you start performing vertigo exercises for vertigo treatment. These include:

  • Not moving or performing any other activity until after 15 minutes of performing any of the above-mentioned vertigo exercises. This is because these exercises for vertigo can make one feel dizzy & bring on other symptoms of vertigo.

  • Having a trusted friend or family member follow you along on your vertigo exercise therapy sessions(if they take place at the doctor’s office). If you perform the exercises at home, you can have someone stand by your side until you’re done to ensure that you are safe & don’t fall or hurt yourself.

  • Walking with support items like cane, walker, etc. if the exercises bring on especially bad vertigo initially after you just begin performing those.
